Slips, trips, and falls (STF) account for almost 30% of workplace injuries in Singapore for the past four years with more than 3,000 employees affected annually. According to preliminary figures released by the MOM, there were 1,844 STF-related injuries in the first half of the year, 142 of which are major injuries resulting from falls. These figures are significantly high in comparison to similar periods in the past.
- STFs are the primary cause of compensation claims. More than half of these are Temporary and Permanent Disability claims.
- About 50 people die every year from a slip, trip, or fall and many more are injured—often critically.
- The majority of injuries happened in the healthcare sector, followed by the construction industry.
- Wet, slippery, or damaged floors, tripping hazards, loose rugs and mats, as well as failure to implement preventive measures contributed directly to more than 2 million STF-related injuries every year.
How to increase safety in the workplace
In response to these alarming statistics, the MOM named three practices to help prevent these STF-related injuries in the workplace
Maintain good housekeeping
Businesses should implement a good maintenance program that should include keeping the floors clean and dry at all times, clearing the pathways of unnecessary items that could otherwise cause obstruction, and storing inventory properly and labelling them for faster and easier retrieval.
Take ownership of everyone’s safety
Business owners and employees alike should take ownership of their personal and others’ safety. Initiatives to raise safety awareness should encourage employees to report potentially dangerous conditions in the workplace.
Implement safety measures
The most concrete step the MOM pushes for is for employers to implement control measures to minimise the risks of STF. Some ways include installing anti-slip indoor floor mats and placing signs that warn workers about hazards like wet and slippery floors.
How commercial floor mats can benefit your workplace
In terms of increasing safety in the workplace, investing in floor mats is a wise decision. These floor care services can benefit your business in many ways, one of which is by reducing risks for slip, trip, and fall accidents that are common in various business facilities.
Floor mats are intentionally placed in high-traffic areas—entrances, wash areas, counters, commercial kitchens, and pantries—to trap dirt and debris as well as absorb moisture and grime that could build up and cause the floors to become wet or slippery.
The benefit of floor matting is not limited to keeping the floors dry. It also helps reduce scratches and stains on the flooring by trapping dirt, sand particles, moisture and other debris that can otherwise compromise the visual appeal of the interior floors.
Placing floor mats can save you some costs on cleaning and maintenance because of its trapping capabilities. Studies show that these products can prevent as much as 75% of dirt and moisture that can enter the premises.
Improve Indoor Air Quality
Preventing all sorts of dirt, debris, and moisture from infiltrating the workplace can improve the indoor air quality. It means employees can benefit from a safe, clean, and a healthy environment because of the absence of debris.
